What’s the Difference? Love does not always need a marriage license to be meaningful. As an officiant, one of the questions I often receive is: “What is the difference between a commitment ceremony and a legal wedding?” The truth is both celebrate love, connection, and partnership — but the legal side is what separates them. A legal wedding ceremony is recognized by the State . The couple obtains a marriage license, the officiant performs the ceremony, witnesses sign when required, and the completed license is filed with the county or state. Once filed, the couple is legally married and receives all the legal rights and responsibilities that come with marriage. A commitment ceremony, on the other hand, is symbolic and personal .
